A file photo shows a TTC streetcar taking on passengers in Toronto.

A TTC driver who left his streetcar to chase after a man who allegedly assaulted a woman has been put on leave pending an internal investigation.

The incident happened Wednesday night on the Queen Street streetcar line.

Toronto Transit Commission spokesman Brad Ross says the driver walked to the back of the streetcar after a violent confrontation between a man and woman.

When the man ran off the streetcar, the driver chased him but the suspect escaped.

There are reports the incident involved a sexual assault, but Mr. Ross said there has been no evidence to support that, adding no victim has come forward.

Mr. Ross says drivers are not allowed the leave their vehicle, adding police should be pursuing suspects and assailants, not TTC employees.
