U.S. will limit countries to which it sends detainees Add to ...

CIA director Leon Panetta says President Barack Obama will limit the countries to which it sends alleged terrorists to make sure they are not tortured or abused.

Mr. Panetta told reporters yesterday that the U.S. government will only render prisoners to other countries if they hold no interest for the United States, and if the other country has a legitimate interest in holding them.

Mr. Panetta suggested that Mr. Obama will only transfer prisoners to countries with good human rights records, and where there is a U.S. diplomatic presence to monitor their treatment.
