A Catholic school teacher from Ajax, Ont. accused of trying to murder his wife in Jamaica in December 2010 has been acquitted by a jury.

Paul Martin had been charged with attempted murder, but was found not guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm A Jamaican news report says the 43-year-old man was overcome with emotion when the verdict was read in court Tuesday.

Mr. Martin was charged after Cathy Lee Martin was found beside a Jamaican road with her throat slashed two days before last Christmas.

He claimed his wife that was the aggressor and was cut in a struggle.

His lawyer says Mr. Martin plans to return to Canada soon.
