Jacmel lets its hair down Add to ...

Jacmel officially came alive again over the weekend. Hundreds of people flocked to the city for the May 1st holiday, a national celebration of Patron Saints. In Jacmel the date was cause for a double celebration - the city's birthday also falls on May 1st and next to February's Carnival, it's usually the biggest party of the year. Because Carnival was cancelled this year following the earthquake, Jacmel felt especially ready to let its hair down.

The same was true of the hundreds of revelers that packed the beaches in and around the city all day and night. With hotel rooms sold out in town, many pitched tents on the beaches and partied throughout the night. Restaurants lining the main road leading out of town were packed well past midnight. Outdoor dance clubs were packed and street vendors had their best sales day in months.

This morning, Jacmel has a newly serene feel to it. It's as if the city is really starting to get its groove back.
