Eleven people were hurt, nine seriously, when a man with suspected mental problems went on a frenzied stabbing spree at the international airport in the Bolivian city of La Paz on Thursday, police said.
Jorge Perez, deputy interior minister, said the incident was sparked when the 40-year-old suspect was denied his request to buy a plane ticket to Chile on a Bolivian airline at El Alto airport.
He ran several meters, stabbing people who crossed his path, including a police sergeant who arrested him.
The police officer was among the seven women and two men badly injured in the mass stabbing, according to Colonel Adolfo Cardenas, of special forces.
Perez said the suspect, Javier Virgilio Cusi Aduviri, has been charged with attempted murder and “will undergo psychiatric evaluation.”
