Pictures of the year: Moments that touched us

‘If it bleeds, it leads’ is an old cliché in journalism that to a large degree still hold today. When looking through photos of 2011 news events, you would be hard pressed to conclude that it was a very news year. But there were, wonderful, touching and uplifting moments that we all can recognize and share.

2011: The year of protests

In its annual review of the year's news, Time magazine named “The Protester” as its 2011 person of the year. Much of the Arab world remains in upheaval. A leaderless movement unknown in 2010, Occupy Wall Street led to sit-ins around the world. Harsh austerity measures forced Europeans into the streets. Even in China, civil unrest is brewing. Change is definitely afoot.
