Bad bet on volatility hits trading revenue at National Bank

National Bank of Canada's third-quarter capital markets results fell significantly short of its peers, partly because of softness in its trading arm.

Profit in National Bank's financial markets division, which includes capital markets, fell by 13 per cent from the same period last year to $174-million. In stark contrast to the rest of the Big Six bank-owned dealers, where double-digit gains were the norm, trading revenue at National Bank fell both year-over-year and sequentially. Story
