I think it is pretty fatuous to condemn the Academy Awards telecast based on some pre-Oscar nitwits interviewing each other.
The fact is that John Doyle missed the heart and soul of the Oscars -- the presentation of the major acting awards. When Hilary Swank told us that she was just a poor girl from a trailer park with a dream, she was clearly overcome with emotion and there was a moment of high drama.
Similarly, when Jamie Foxx shared with the viewers memories of how his grandmother used to whip him, while telling him that she wanted him to be a southern gentleman, or when he talked about how Oprah Winfrey introduced him to Sidney Poitier, and then did a perfect Sidney Poitier impersonation, it was riveting. The tedium of the previous three hours was forgotten.Report Typo/Error
