Speeding, street racing and other vehicle-related problems could be solved by the federal government putting a safe upper cap on vehicle maximum speed capabilities and vehicle weights (Safety Organization Assails Harper's Plan To Punish Street Racers -- May 27). Passenger vehicles are dangerous to cyclists, pedestrians and drivers alike, because they weigh thousands of pounds and have capabilities of at least 180 km/h.

The current line of thinking is to regulate and punish driver conduct through the Motor Vehicle Act and Criminal Code, but there's an easier and feasible way: Replace the Motor Vehicle Act with an act that restricts the automotive industry to designs having safer, lower weights and speed capabilities.
