The Heart and Stroke Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Doug Clement as the chair of its board of directors.

A long-time ambassador for the Foundation, Dr. Clement is a former chair of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon and has served on the board of directors of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for the past three years.

He is an internationally recognized former Olympic and Commonwealth athlete and coach who is now a professor emeritus and vice-chair of the faculty of medicine at the University of British Columbia.

As co-founder of the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre, he taught and practiced sports medicine for more than 20 years. Dr. Clement has served as a director of the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine and the Achilles International Track and Field Society.

He was physician to the Vancouver Canucks and on the medical and coaching staffs of more than 12 Olympic Games. He is a Member of the Order of Canada and the recipient of numerous academic and professional awards.

“I bring a different perspective to the Foundation, as a stroke survivor and as a sports medicine specialist. I have gone from helping individuals through my medical practice to helping change policies and behaviours on a bigger scale.”

Healthy lives free of heart disease and stroke. Together we will make it happen.
