Propelled by a host of serious enhancements, what may be the most capable iterations of Ram trucks ever built have charged boldly into 2013. With new technological advancements, class-leading fuel economy, added features and all-new interiors, the Ram is driving full speed ahead and leaving the competition in the dust. And the changes aren’t going unnoticed. The new 2013 Ram 1500 has won numerous awards, including the coveted 2013 North American Truck of the Year, selected for top spot by leading automotive journalists across Canada and the United States.
“We put together 12 of these amazing technologies to give us best-in-class 36 miles per gallon. Who would have ever thought a big rig like this could deliver that kind of high fuel economy? Active grille shutters, active air suspension, seven-inch full-colour display centre, and so on and so on,” said Fred Diaz, president and CEO, Ram Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC, after receiving the top prize at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan in January.
Ram trucks are Canada’s longest-lasting pickups, providing best-in-class fuel efficiency, extraordinary technology and unparalleled capability on and off the road. For 2013, engineers altered every inch of the Ram – it has a newly designed frame, a new 3.6-litre Pentastar VVT V6 engine, a new 8-speed automatic transmission and a refined interior that includes the next generation Uconnect multimedia centre for staying connected at all times. Designers enhanced the exterior, but left the Ram looking tough as nails, remaining instantly recognizable on the road.
Starting at only $26,995 MSRP, the 2013 Ram 1500 is available in a range of trims, body styles, bed lengths and powertrains. You can stick with the basics for work or get it loaded-to-the-nines for an elegant night on the town. New for 2013 is the award-winning 3.6-litre Pentastar VVT V6 engine, which delivers 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque – up significantly compared to the outgoing 3.7-litre V6 engine that pumped out 215 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. An all-new eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission is the first eight-speed automatic in a pickup. Other engines are offered, including a powerful 5.7-litre HEMI V8, which delivers 395 horsepower and 407 lb-ft of torque on Ram 1500.
Ram sales numbers speak volumes. Retail sales jumped 10 per cent from 2011 to 2012. There’s no doubt those numbers will climb for 2013 with the new Ram and the all-new 2013 Ram Heavy Duty trucks, the king of hauling and towing, which roll out later in the spring.

2013 RAM HEAVY DUTY - Serious Business
Ram Heavy Duty trucks are taking the bull by the horns. The all-new 2013 Ram HD pickups and Chassis Cab trucks are the masters of towing and hauling. The maximum trailer tow capability of the Ram 3500 Heavy Duty is an impressive 13,608 kg – its closest competitors don’t even come within sight of that number. The 3500’s Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR), which represents the maximum combined weight of the truck, payload and trailer, increases to a class-leading 17,055 kg, far surpassing its closest competitor.
Ram 3500 models owe their muscle and might to significant changes for 2013, including a new 50,000-pounds-per-square-inch high-strength steel frame, improved transfer case with a higher load transmission and an upgraded high-output 6.7-litre Cummins Turbo Diesel, which pounds out up to 385 horsepower and an unsurpassed 850 lb-ft of torque!
The Ram-Cummins diesel partnership runs deep, spanning four decades and counting. In fact, Cummins just produced its two-millionth diesel engine for Ram. For 2013, the HD diesels get even better with an all-new cooling system for improved performance, dual radiators, dual transmission coolers and a low-slung charge air cooler with 25 per cent more heat rejection capacity designed to keep the diesel engine as cool as possible.
Other groundbreaking features include an available factory-integrated fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitch mount. Standard on all models are a 7,711-kg class V receiver hitch and electronic stability control. New is an optional centre high-mounted stop light positioned camera, which is the first of its kind in the HD pickup segment. Another bonus is the oil changes – they’re few and far between. With diesel oil change intervals of up to 24,000 kilometres, you’ll have fewer trips to the garage and more money in your wallet.
It’s no wonder the 2013 Ram Heavy Duty trucks are Canada’s longest-lasting and most durable diesel pickups. The Ram HD pickups hit the streets this spring, and you can bet they’ll continue to rule the road.
• Ram 2500 leads all three-quarter tonne pickups in towing.
• For 2013, the Ram 2500 gets increased towing and GCWR capacity of 8,310 kg and 11,340 kg respectively.
• Ram Chassis Cab trucks also deliver best-in-class towing (13,426 kg) and GCWR figures (17,010 kg) for the 5500 model.
• No one beats the Cummins Turbo Diesel’s hefty 850 lb-ft of torque on Ram 1500 models equipped with the new AISIN automatic transmission.
2013 RAM 1500 -Fuel-efficient and stylish
The Ram 1500 redefines the pickup. It’s the longest-lasting, most fuel-efficient and stylish truck on the market – a rugged workhorse for the construction site or a comfortable family hauler for a quick weekend getaway. Whatever the job, Ram’s diverse lineup has it covered. Offered in nine trims, you can choose between a range of trucks, from an affordable 4x2 Regular Cab ST to an ultra-luxurious 4x4 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab. There’s a choice of dependable engines, too, including the legendary 5.7-litre HEMI V8 or the award-winning 3.6-litre Pentastar VVT V6 engine.
The Ram gets top marks in fuel efficiency, thanks to a truckload of pioneering and fuel-saving technology. One of the most innovative features is a stop-start system available on the new HFE model, which kills the engine when stopped and automatically restarts it again to save fuel. Other exclusive features include an all-new eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission with a cool electronic rotary dial shifter, a thermal management system and active grille shutters. You’ll also find segment-exclusive items such as the active air suspension, wheel-to-wheel side steps and a unique RamBox cargo storage system that lets you keep valuables stowed securely away in long, lockable bins on both sides of the bed.
On the outside, the Ram retains its muscular, aggressive stance, but inside it raises the bar to a whole new level with premium materials at every price point, an easy-to-use 8.4-inch multimedia centre and a class-leading 7-inch in-cluster multi-view information centre.
“Ram really took a step way, way forward in technology and in innovation, in a truck for that matter,” says Fred Diaz, president and CEO of Ram Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Who would have thought five to 10 years ago that a truck would have this kind of luxury in the interior as well as just plain refinement and still without losing any of its rugged capability? It’s arguably the most handsome and ruggedly good-looking truck on the road.”
• The 2013 Ram 1500 starts at only $26,995 MSRP.
• The award-winning 3.6-litre Pentastar VVT V6 flex fuel engine delivers 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, while the legendary 5.7-litre HEMI V8 pumps out 395 horsepower and 407 lb-ft of torque.
• Also available is a 7-inch multiview full-colour thin-film transistor vehicle information display within the new six-gauge instrument cluster.
