Representatives from finalists for the 2014 Private Business Growth Award.

They are the backbone of Canada's economy. Yet, until recent years, these stars of the business world had often gone unnoticed despite their importance as a driving force of innovation and prosperity and for making waves not only locally, but globally as well.

The Private Business Growth Award brings due recognition to private companies that approach growth from both a strategic and holistic perspective to spur gains beyond the top line.

Celebrated each November, the award – presented by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Grant Thornton LLP – focuses on the achievements of private companies, which account for a large portion of our country's economy, jobs, export market and innovation.

"Private businesses are the foundation of the Canadian economy," says Phil Noble, CEO and executive partner at Grant Thornton LLP, a leading Canadian accounting, tax and business advisory firm. "Yet we know there are thousands of unknown private businesses, across the country, that are thriving in the face of highly competitive markets and increasingly complex challenges. These companies are the unsung heroes of Canadian business."

Perrin Beatty, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, adds, "Success isn't just about becoming bigger today. It's about taking action and making investments on various fronts that will enable you to build a strong platform for long-term growth."

Since 2012, the Private Business Growth Award has recognized 18 finalists and two winners. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Grant Thornton LLP are now accepting nominations for the 2015 award online at PrivateBusinessGrowthAward.com.
