The annual study, considered one of the industry’s most rigorous, tracks problems experienced by new-vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership. In 2016 Kia became the first non-luxury brand in the study’s history to boast the fewest reported problems per 100 vehicles, with a score of 83. In comparison, the 2016 industry average was 105. In the same study, the 2016 Kia Soul and Sportage models emerged as category leaders for quality. The Soul outperformed the average score for its category by nine points while the Sportage finished 33 points better than average.

2016 Annual Auto Reliability Survey

Kia ranked fifth in a field of 29 automotive brands, surpassing luxury car manufacturers like BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. It was also one of only a few that could say not a single one of its models scored below average in their respective categories.

The world’s largest consumer nonprofit organization began publishing annual reliability rankings for the auto industry in 2001. Each year the organization analyzes more than half a million vehicles spanning 300 models to predict future reliability based on past performance. The ranking is intended to help consumers know which car manufacturers make vehicles that will stay on the road the longest with the fewest mechanical issues.

The new 2016 Kia Sorento was recognized by the the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) as the best new SUV/CUV in the $35,000 to $60,000 category. Two other Kia vehicles, the Sportage and the Optima Hybrid, were top three finalists in their categories.

Chosen by automotive journalists and members of the press, the AJAC Car of the Year Awards puts all new vehicles through rigorous testing in real-world driving scenarios. Broken up into teams and assigned to specific car categories, journalists evaluate the automobile’s performance on 21 separate parameters that include braking, vehicle dynamics and manoeuvrability.
