"Gender is a business issue, not a 'women's issue,' " according to Avivah Wittenberg-Cox and Alison Maitland, co-authors of Why Women Mean Business: Understanding the emergence of our next economic revolution, published by John Wiley. The authors say they want to wake business up to "womenomics", the economic revolution created by women's increasing power, potential and economic clout.
Canadian Avivah Wittenberg-Cox is an executive coach and CEO of 20-First, one of Europe's leading gender consultancies, who advises companies on gender-related issues. She is the founder and honourary president of the European Professional Women's Network.
A former journalist with The Financial Times in Britain, Alison Maitland is an independent journalist and commentator, who researches and writes about women in business, leadership and corporate responsibility. Maitland is also a Senior Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Management at Cass Business School, London, England and director of the Life-Work & Diversity Council of The Conference Board Europe.
Report on Small Business spoke to the authors at their recent Canadian book launch in Toronto to explain why many current approaches to gender have not worked and why business needs a new perspective.
