Having volunteer work in your résumé has the potential to make you more attractive to employers, a survey suggests.
The poll of 1,200 professionals in Canada found that 84 per cent have personally had experience doing volunteer work, including fund raising and organizing charity events, but only 60 per cent said they’ve included those experiences on their résumés.
They may have been missing an opportunity, because 46 per cent of people in hiring positions said they consider such volunteer work equally as valuable as paid work experience when evaluating candidates. And 24 per cent said they have made a hiring decision based on a candidate’s history of volunteering.
The professional networking site LinkedIn.com, which commissioned the survey, has just added a “volunteer experience & causes” field in its member profiles.
