Calfrac co-founder Doug Ramsay says he hopes his gift to Foothills Country Hospice will encourage others to contribute to what he calls 'such a great cause.'TODD KOROL

The donors: Doug and Susan Ramsay

The gift: $750,000

The cause: Foothills Country Hospice

Ever since the Foothills Country Hospice opened in 2008 near their home in Okotoks, Alta., Doug and Susan Ramsay have helped out as volunteers and strong supporters.

The couple recently went further, donating $750,000 toward a fundraising campaign to expand the centre, which is among the few rural hospices in Canada. Foothills cares for about 100 terminally ill people and their families annually from its facility in Okotoks, which is south of Calgary.

"Susan and I have followed the progress of Foothills since it began," said Mr. Ramsay, who co-founded Calfrac Well Services Ltd. in 1999 and stepped down as chief executive officer in 2013. "We just thought this was such a great cause."

Mr. Ramsay said he hopes his gift will encourage others to contribute as well. He said he knows several families touched by the services offered by Foothills and how the staff "made everything much easier."

"I hope they can continue to grow and expand so more people can experience this kind of care," he said. "This cause is extremely close to our hearts."
