Stephen Sander has deep roots with the Lions Gate Hospital stretching back 50 years.
More than 20 family members have been born in the hospital, which is located in North Vancouver where most of the Sanders still live and work. Mr. Sander, 82, founded Hollyburn Properties Ltd. in the 1970s, which is among the largest managers of rental buildings in Canada.
For years, many patients at the hospital had to travel more than 100 kilometres to Whistler, B.C., to have MRI scans because Lions Gate did not have the proper equipment. Mr. Sander was among those affected and he vowed to solve the problem. Earlier this month he donated $1-million to help the hospital buy an advanced MRI machine.
"It was important to him that people in this area are better served," said his son Dan, who is president of Hollyburn and one of four Sander family members who work at the company.
The donation, he added, was "a way for us to give back to the people and their families of this community, who have supported us for the past 40 years."
