If you're a manager and considering giving up your vacation this summer due to competitive pressures, here's four reasons why it's good for a boss to get away, according to Montreal business coach Tanveer Naseer on his blog:
It recharges your productivity: Leaders need a break to pursue other interests. This gives your productivity a boost and opens your eyes to new possibilities and directions. You return with a fresh perspective on the problems dogging you.
It sets a good example: You should lead by example, demonstrating how much you value a refreshing break and how much you feel your staff's vacations will benefit them. "Leaders should not only take their vacation, but make a point of advising their employees that they expect each of them to do the same," Mr. Naseer writes.
It shows you trust your staff: Demonstrate to your team that you trust their ability to manage without you. When you're away, believe it or not, subordinates can develop their management skills, and boost their confidence that they can operate effectively without your intervention.
You've earned it: People need to realize that their hard work is reimbursed not only by salary and bonuses, but also by vacation time. Managers and employees alike should take their allotted time, and enjoy it.
