It's office party time, so here are some tips on how to watch your weight and avoid getting up the next morning with a hangover of bad memories, courtesy of the Winning in the Workplace newsletter and Productivity Café blog
Watch drinks
If alcohol is served, never have more than two drinks. There should be no exceptions to that rule - this is no time to get tipsy.
Mingle
This is a great chance to chat with people you may not interact with a lot on the job. The more people you know in the organization, at all levels, the more enjoyable the work can become.
Eat before the party
Unless a famous chef is catering, you're better off to eat a satisfying and healthy meal at home than gobble down the fatty foods from party centres and hotels. Limit yourself to tasting the three most delicious items, and instead of eating focus on the fun you can have with the people there.
Don't drink your calories
Remember that you can gain half a pound a day simply by drinking your calories. Replace the café mocha with a cup of coffee and a splash of half and half. Every other time you go to the bar for a beverage, have a tall club soda with a twist of lime (0 calories) or a wine spritzer (60 calories).
Don't sell
This is not a good time to try to sell yourself or your new idea to the boss. She has other things on her mind, and may just get annoyed. You're better off just making a good impression, so she will be more receptive to your ideas during working hours.
Don't gossip
You won't make a good impression on anyone with gossip.
Give thanks
Thank the organizers who pulled the party together. Thank the boss as well for hosting it.
Dress appropriately
Over-dressing is better than under-dressing. Avoid collarless T-shirts and low-cut tops.
