Marketers need to track patterns

Research by two academics found that even individuals who love a certain food category such as yogurt or frankfurters often have periods of no consumption, or shift between low and high purchasing patterns. Sungho Park of W.P. Carey School of Business and Sachin Gupta of Cornell University say marketers need to track such patterns because where cyclical buyers are in their purchasing pattern will determine the effectiveness of sales promotions. For example, promoting yogurt to consumers at the high point of their purchasing cycle led to an 89-per-cent increase in the promotion's impact. Knowledge@WP Carey
