The Canadian Auto Workers union has agreed to a new contract with Johnson Controls, a major auto parts maker with a plant in Whitby, Ont.

The union says the new deal came just hours before a strike deadline early Friday morning.

CAW Local 222 president Chris Buckley says the deal secures jobs at the parts plant well into the future.

Details of the agreement will be released Sunday after a union ratification meeting.

The CAW represents more than 300 workers at the Whitby plant, which makes door pads and floor consoles for GM Canada vehicles built in nearby Oshawa.

The union says Johnson Controls was trying to move the Whitby jobs to the United States.

It did not say whether workers made concessions in the new contract to save their jobs.
