Joe Aiello created a successful Canadian manufacturing company out of a plant abandoned by a multinational manufacturing titan. He's co-owner of Elettra Technology Inc. (ETI), a maker of electric motors formed in 1995 after Westinghouse Electric Corp., closed its electric motor plant in Hamilton, Ont. Since then, ETI has hurdled every roadblock thrown up the economy. Its success offers lessons on how a company created from destruction can thrive beyond its initial start-up phase and compete as a Canadian manufacturer in an age when the perception is that the death of manufacturing in this country is inevitable.
