Nova Scotia-based Ocean Nutrition Canada has been gobbled up by Dutch company Royal DSm for $540-million in a move that will allow the dietary supplement company to expand its operations.J.P. Moczulski/The Globe and Mail

A Dutch company specializing in sustainable dietary supplements has bought Ocean Nutrition Canada, a Nova Scotia-based manufacturer of fish oil.

Royal DSM says in a release today that it acquired the Halifax company for $540-million and plans to expand its lipids growth platform.

Ocean Nutrition has become a global leader in the provision of Omega-3 fish oil ingredients to manufacturers of dietary supplements.

According to the statement, Ocean Nutrition is projecting sales this year of $190-million.

Founded in 1997, Ocean Nutrition has about 415 employees and has production sites in Canada, the Unites States and Peru.
