A U.S. district court judge has rejected Conrad Black's bid for bail while his conviction is reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court.
U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve, who presided over Mr. Black's trial in Chicago in 2007, originally was to hold a bail hearing July 24, but cancelled it.
"Black has failed to establish that a ruling in his favour on the issues before the Supreme Court is likely to result in a reversal of his obstruction of justice conviction or a shorter sentence than the total of time defendant already has served in prison plus the anticipated time it will take the Supreme Court to resolve the merits of his case," she wrote.
Mr. Black was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison after his conviction on one count of obstructing justice and three counts of mail fraud related to what was then Hollinger International Inc., now Sun-Times Media Group Inc.
