The fire that devoured nearly 6,000 square kilometres in and around Fort McMurray burned at up to 1,000 C. Hundreds of firefighters helped tame the inferno, including 182 from nearby Strathcona, pictured catching some zzz's on a front lawn after working for 14 straight hours. The Strathcona contingent were clad in overalls, shirts, pants and jackets made by Calgary-based Guardian Protective Clothing, a family-run business that stitches all its gear in Alberta. Using heat- and flame-resistant polymers like Nomex and Kermel, Guardian cuts each piece of fabric with a computerized pattern, then customizes garments to individual firefighters' specs. Guardian Protective also outfits welders, oil and forestry workers, and helicopter crews across Canada, in the U.S., Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.
