Rogers buys data centre company BlackironMARK BLINCH/Reuters

Rogers Communications Inc. says it has bought data centre company Blackiron Data from Primus Telecommunications Group for $200-million in cash.

Blackiron has a total of eight data centres in Toronto, Ottawa, London, Edmonton and Vancouver and 132 employees who will join Rogers.

Rogers said the deal will allow it to improve its enterprise-level data centre and cloud computing services.

"The cloud continues to enable businesses to innovate and evolve in a dynamic market," said Terry Canning, senior vice-president of Rogers Business Solutions.

"This acquisition presents Rogers with a significant growth opportunity in the business-to-business market that aligns with our overall enterprise strategy."

In 2012, Blackiron Data reported revenue of $33.7-million (U.S.) and earnings before interest, taxes depreciation and amoritization of $13-million.

Rogers offers cable television and Internet services as well as wireless communications.

The company's media operations include radio and television broadcasting, magazines and trade publications, sports entertainment, and digital media.
