Bankruptcies in Canada up 50 per cent in June from previous year

Ottawa— The Canadian Press

The government agency that oversees bankruptcies in Canada says the number of people and businesses that went bust in June was 51.1 per cent higher than in June, 2008.

The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy says 14,418 insolvencies were recorded in June of this year, compared with 9,538 a year earlier.

Personal bankruptcies, which made up the vast majority of the filings, rose 54.3 per cent over June, 2008, to a total of 13,792.

The agency said that during the recession of 1990-91, jumps in monthly bankruptcies ranged from 37 per cent to 76 per cent higher than the same month a year earlier.

It also says in that recession there was a string of five consecutive months when bankruptcies rose 60 per cent on a year-over-year basis.

For the 12 months ending June 30, business bankruptcies actually decreased by 4.9 per cent compared with the 12 months ending June 30, 2008, mostly because of fewer insolvencies in construction and retail.
