IN HER OWN WORDS
I started as an intern at TalentEgg in 2008, while I was still a journalism student at Ryerson University. Once the recession hit, it was tough to get employers to post jobs, and students really flock to the site when there are a lot of employers. We started bouncing around ideas for producing content that didn't rely on employers, so students would still have a reason to come to the site. And hopefully that would give employers an incentive to advertise with us.
It worked. Students started writing about their own experiences getting jobs and internships. We then realized that employers really wanted to communicate their message through articles or interviews with students and recent graduates. For example, we did a video blog with an engineer at Ontario Power Generation about his interview process and what it's like to work there.
I knew the opportunity at TalentEgg was huge, and I could be at the forefront of something that didn't exist yet. I could create. You don't have to just sit there and do what someone tells you to do – you can be an entrepreneur within a company. We wouldn't have been as successful as we have been if we weren't all entrepreneurial. Every leap and bound we've made has been because someone had a really cool idea and decided to act on it, instead of thinking about it too much.
