Why your company should be on "Pinterest"

On the surface, Pinterest may seem a bit like the It Girl of social media and you may be wondering whether it's worth creating a profile for your business. The answer is yes, especially if your target market is women between the ages of 25-44 (a group that makes up more than 60 per cent of the user base), but also if your company makes unique, pretty-looking products.

But before you take the plunge, keep in mind that while the curated online pinboards may seem like great real estate for your brand, etiquette states it's not a place for self-promotion. So how can your business tap into this community while playing by the rules?

This blog offers useful tips for navigating Pinterest and examples of how companies are already using it. Here's a quick rundown:

1. Because of its anti-advertisement stance, Pinterest forces you to think creatively and differently about your brand;

2. It's the ultimate focus group. Use information about your following to get insight on your target consumers;

3. It's a great crowdsourcing tool. Encourage followers to post photos of themselves at events or with your products;

4. Use Pinterest as a contest platform where users can enter draws to win prizes;

5. Boost company morale by creating inspiring boards about what your company means.

Small-business outlook nudges up

Small business owners south of the border were more confident in December as the outlook on profits, the economy and future sales improved, according to a new survey.

The National Federation of Independent Business's index rose to 93.8 last month from 92 the previous month. The gauge average 88.2 in the recession that ended in June 2009.

December's gain marks the fourth month of improvement, yet it still only hovers above recessionary levels.

"Make no mistake: the economic winter is still here," William Dunkelberg, the group's chief economist, said in a statement. "There is still a lot of work to be done."
