Unhappy ending
Akanksha Rathi appeared to be leading a charmed life: The 32-year-old entrepreneur from India was well-regarded in the steel industry for her business acumen, having turned her husband's company into a multimillion-dollar property. In 2009, she won the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship award for her efforts.
But as Dean Nelson reports in The Daily Telegraph, it all came to a crashing halt when she was found dead, mere weeks after he husband died of a heart attack in September.
According to reports, her husband's family opposed their "love marriage" because she was from a low caste. She had claimed before her death that they had been harassing her as part of a campaign to sever her inheritance. Police said Ms. Rathi was later found hanging from a ceiling fan in her home after taking sleeping pills.
"Ms. Rathi had filed a dowry harassment complaint against her in-laws earlier this month," police spokesman Abid Khan told the Telegraph. "She had accused them of mentally torturing her and passing casuist remarks."
New incubation centre in Waterloo, Ont.
Cisco and the University of Waterloo have partnered in the Cisco Incubation Centre "to nurture Canada's next generation of entrepreneurs," a press release states. The centre, in the school's David Johnston Research and Technology Park, will give startups and students in the region access to the company's "collaboration technology, expertise and global partner ecosystem." Researchers and entrepreneurs can use tools such as Cisco TelePresence to collaborate with university research parks and innovation centres across Canada and around the world.
Data protection firm scores new funding
Privacy Analytics, which protects personal data used in analysis and research, has closed a venture capital investment from the BDC IT Venture Fund and the Capital Angel Network, the company has announced. The funds will be used "to ramp up sales and marketing efforts in a rapidly growing market." Privacy Analytics works with some of the largest research organizations, pharmaceutical, healthcare and insurance providers in North America. The BDC IT Venture Fund invests in early stage IT companies that are disrupting existing industries or creating new markets.
