'Freemium is not a business model, it's a customer acquisition strategy,' says entrepreneur, author and event organizer Alistair Croll. And if a company - like DropBox or Evenote, for example - has a strong product, the strategy is valid. The reason why it doesn't work for nine out of 10 companies is because they use freemium as a proxy for revenue for a product that's simply not good enough.
