Spain's cabinet on Wednesday passed a decree containing controversial labour reforms the government deems essential to reviving its sluggish economy, Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said.

The decree is due to take effect on Thursday but for it to remain in force, the minority Socialist government need to convince opposition parties to ratify it in a parliamentary vote on June 22, which analysts predict they will do despite the skepticism they have recently voiced.
