Bennett Jones LLP is beefing up its competition law practice, snagging prominent antitrust lawyer Randy Hughes from McCarthy Tétrault LLP, where he had been that firm's practice group leader.

The move makes a lot of sense for Bennett Jones, given the increasing attention being paid to both the Competition Bureau and Investment Canada in merger deals.

"Randy is an extraordinary person and we're delighted to add even more strength to our antitrust and competition group," Bennett Jones chairman and chief executive officer Hugh MacKinnon said in a statement released Wednesday.

Mr. Hughes is a veteran of steering mergers through the increasingly complex waters of the Competition Bureau and Investment Canada. He has defended clients hauled before the courts and the Competition Tribunal, and acts for companies in both domestic and international competition conspiracy probes and civil actions related to competition law. He has also acted as counsel for the commissioner of competition at the tribunal.

His résumé doesn't end with competition law. Mr. Hughes was counsel in the Dubin Inquiry into peformance enhancing drugs in sports and the Krever tainted blood inquiry, appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada.
