Reading a book

Every December there are stories and slideshows about the biggest news events of the year or the best photographs from around the world. But you rarely see compilations of the best business reporting – particularly for finance journalism.

To fix that, I've compiled a list that had just one requirement: the stories simply had to come from outside The Globe and Mail. Some were chosen because they are funny reads, others because they are incredibly in-depth reports. Some are finance-oriented, others are about the broader business world.

But there's one constant: they're all great.

The iEconomy
The New York Times' eight-part series on everything Apple. Covers everything from its quirky relationship with Chinese workers to its war for patents.

The Randian and the bailout
An eye-opening profile of AIG CEO Bob Benmosche.

Blackrock: Ahead of the Street
A close look at the financial behemoth and its boss, Larry Fink.

Wal-Mart abroad: How a retail giant fueled growth with bribes
The New York Times' thorough investigation into Wal-Mart's foul play in Mexico.

Dad, you were right
The FT's Gillian Tett admits she was wrong about the euro. And her dad wasn't.

The woman who took the fall for JPMorgan Chase
When the London Whale scandal first broke, all eyes were on Ina Drew. Who is she? And why did Jamie Dimon suspiciously go on-the-record in this profile to support her?

The hunch, the pounce and the kill
Boaz Weinstein sunk the London Whale. But what about his own team's $2-billion loss at Deutsche?

The other barbarians at the gates
Purely for the comedy of billionaires in the Hamptons.

Citi chairman said to have planned chief's exit over months
The detailed account of what happened at Citi.

Michael Lewis commencement speech at Princeton
Okay, this isn't journalism. But it's written by one of the best business writers alive.

FT lunch with Ian McEwan
Not exactly business coverage. But the lede alone is worth it. "I usually marry my FT interviewer but I can't do it this time."
