Borden Ladner Gervais LLP says it has lured a Calgary oil-and-gas partner away from rival Norton Rose Fulbright LLP.

BLG said Monday that Miles Pittman has left Norton Rose Fulbright for BLG, which he joins as a partner in the oil-and-gas group in Calgary.

BLG says the move boosts the firm's strength in energy mergers and acquisitions and project structure and development.

Mr. Pittman, who advises on oil sands and liquid-natural-gas projects, is a commercial and corporate lawyer who has also worked on restructurings – a skill set that may be of more use as the downturn in oil prices continues.

He has worked at Norton Rose Fulbright's Calgary office since 2010. He also previously worked at Fraser Milner Casgrain (now Dentons Canada LLP) and well-known Calgary firm Burnet Duckworth & Palmer LLP. He was called to the Alberta bar in 1994.

"His transaction experience in both M&A and restructuring will mean BLG's clients can access the best advice for each cycle of their business," said David Whelan, BLG's regional managing partner and the national leader of the firm's oil and gas group.
