Steve Calderwood, the Calgary investment banker who left Salman Partners Inc. last month, is trying his hand at investor relations.

Mr. Calderwood has signed on with 5 Quarters Investor Relations Inc., a small consulting firm led by former TSX and TSX Venture Exchange executive Cindy Gray.

He said investor relations expertise is lacking among many companies in the oil patch, which means big opportunities for a firm such as 5 Quarters. It advises public and private companies on capital markets issues, disclosure and investor communications.

"It's definitely an area where not only I can contribute, but there needs to be more contribution from management teams to tell their story, and to get their story right," Mr. Calderwood said. "A lot of them need help, and so I think having a consulting role in investor relations is a good thing to do."

He had been senior vice-president of investment banking at Salman, which has trimmed operations following several months of weak merger and financing activity in the oil patch.

A onetime oil research analyst, he was a vice-president at Talisman Energy joining Salman in late 2011.
