Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has added a new name to its equity trading desk.Fred Lum/The Globe and Mail

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has hired an outsider to lead its asset management arm.

Dave Scandiffio, currently an executive vice-president at Industrial Alliance and the former president of IA Clarington, is heading to CIBC to serve as president of asset management.

The hire fills a hole created by an executive shuffle announced in September. Victor Dodig used to run the bank's wealth management group, but his promotion to CEO prompted him to promote Steve Geist, then the head of asset management, into his old role last fall. Mr. Scandiffio is now taking over Mr. Geist's old job.

Before he started working in financial services, Mr. Scandiffio played football for the University of Toronto football team that won the Vanier Cup.

Mr. Scandiffio will start at CIBC in April.
