CIBC World Markets is beefing up its European investment banking team by hiring private equity and energy financiers. At a time when European buyouts are outpacing deals in North America - with the credit crunch slowing things down on both sides of the ocean - CIBC World Markets hired a buyout veteran Simon Murphy from HSBC. He will cover business service companies and private equity funds in Europe and Asia. The oil and gas team picked up Gordon Strobeck, who was previously a managing director at a Kazakhstan-based investment bank that advised the national government on the IPO of a state-owned oil company, Kazmunaigas E&P.  Mr. Strobeck has also worked Morgan Stanley and UBS, and began his career as an engineer with Phillips Petroleum.
