Former top-ranked equity analyst Matthew Akman has left Scotia Capital Inc. to take a high-profile position at one of the companies he used to cover.

According to an e-mail sent internally to Scotia employees on Monday, Mr. Akman is joining Enbridge Inc. as head of corporate strategy. He is moving to Calgary to take up the new job.

Over a 16-year career in equity research, Mr. Akman worked for CIBC World Markets Inc., Macquarie Capital Markets Canada Ltd. and, most recently, Scotia Capital, where he was a pipelines and utilities analyst.

In 2014, he was named a "top gun" analyst in the alternative energy and utilities sector. Top guns are considered to be in the upper-10-per-cent echelon of analysts.

Working for Enbridge won't be an entirely new experience for Mr. Akman: He did a stint at the pipeline company early in his career – before he worked on Bay Street.
