The venture capital arm of OMERS pension fund has hired a tech specialist to build out its investment team.

The new director, George Babu, is well versed in everything from hardware to enterprise software and most recently oversaw U.S. operations for Wrapp, a social gifting startup. Mr. Babu has also worked at Rypple, which was sold to Salesforce.com, and at Research in Motion for nine years.

OMERS Ventures first launched as a $180-million fund in late 2011 and now has an investment team of nine people. Mr. Babu will work under Howard Gwin, the firm's managing director for technology.
