Rick George, president and CEO of Suncor Energy, addresses shareholders during the company's annual meeting in Calgary, Tuesday, May 4, 2010.Jeff McIntosh

It can be hard for a chief executive officer to truly walk away from the hustle and bustle of their jobs when they retire. The lucky ones nab board seats at other companies, which allow them to stay out of the ring, but still provide a seat close to it.

That's precisely the case for Rick George, the outgoing chief executive officer of Suncor Energy , who is set to retire in May. Effective today, he is the newest member of Royal Bank of Canada's board of directors.

This isn't Mr. George's first board seat. He is currently a director of Canadian Pacific Railway, which is chaired by former RBC CEO John Cleghorn, and he is also on the board of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, which is run by John Manley, who also sits on CP's board.
