Toyota Canada Inc. will reconfigure accelerator pedals and the floors on some of its vehicles an install a brake override system on some of them in the wake of U.S. accidents believed to be caused by floor mats causing pedals to stick. Four members of a California family died in an accident in August that brought about an apology from Toyota Motor Corp. CEO Akio Toyoda. About 200,000 vehicles in Canada are affected, including 2007-10 Camry, Tundra and Lexus ES350 vehicles, 2005-10 Tacoma and Avalon models, 2004-09 Prius cars and 2006-10 Lexus IS 350 and IS350 models. "There is no risk of accelerator pedal entrapment when compatible Toyota and Lexus Canada-designed all-weather floor mats are properly used in the affected models as they are different in design and material composition from the Toyota-supplied mats in the U.S.A.," Toyota Canada said in a statement. Toyota dealers will modify the pedals early next year. A brake override system will be installed on Camrys, Avalons and the three Lexus models. It cuts power to the engine when the gas and brake pedals are pressed at the same time.
