Sobeys Inc. confirmed Thursday it is closing about 50 underperforming stores following its takeover last year of Safeway Canada as the grocer races to slash costs amid burgeoning competition.

A letter obtained by The Globe and Mail reveals which stores are closing.

The stores that are closing operate under the Sobeys and Safeway banners, but also include 15 smaller stores (less than 20,000 square feet) under an array of the company's banner names, including IGA (in Western Canada,) Cash & Carry and Foodland, a company executive said.

They include:

Atlantic Canada: 6 stores

Quebec: 1 store

Ontario:  7 stores (including the Sobeys Urban Fresh store on Front Street, near Sherbourne, in Toronto, that closed this week)

West: 25 stores

Use the map to find out which exact stores are closing and when.
