Nine Cabinet Ministers, among them Trade Minister Howe and Finance Minister Harris, went down to defeat in the Liberal collapse. No part of the nation was left untouched by the sweep of the Diefenbaker-led forces. Even the fortress of Quebec felt the impact of the tide which carried the Conservatives to a minority victory. In destroying the myth of Liberal invincibility, the Conservatives chalked up gains in every province. Seventeen of the 18 Toronto seats went Conservative. The lone exception was Toronto-Trinity, where Dr. Stanley Haldasz won for the Liberal cause. The CCF lost its one seat in the Toronto area, York South returning a Conservative. But the socialist party had revenge in Port Arthur, where its candidate downed Trade Minister Howe.
