Who can resist a ringing telephone?

It was winter. It was 1974, I think. And I had hitched a ride into downtown Toronto from York University with one of my professors. We were just leaving the campus when he switched on the car radio and said, "I hope you don't mind, but I can't miss my favourite show . . . As It Happens." He added that he planned his drive home each night to catch at least 45 minutes of it.
