Fresh, frank and fanciful
The Blue GirlBy Charles de LintViking, 368 pages, $26When the task of developing the young-adult collection at our library fell into my hands, I made sure that Charles de Lint's mythic fiction found a place on the shelf. De Lint's gift for capturing the essence of the "other," his thoughtful explorations of identity and his strong characterizations all have powerful appeal for teenagers. That he often includes teenaged characters and writes about them respectfully certainly adds to that appeal.
