Blue cogs in a corporate wheel
In the late eighties, a group of three young men donned scalp caps to make themselves look bald and ear-less, then painted the skin of their hands and head ocean blue. In the East Village theatres of New York, they played a mix of electronic rock and hip hop with unusual percussive instruments, most of which they invented -- thin, fibreglass air poles that make a swooshing sound as they slice through the air and a "shaker gong" made from ball bearings encased in metal and suspended from surgical tubing, among others. Their theatrical show was humorous, intellectual, subversive.
