When I patted around and didn't find the cup, I briefly imagined my hand had passed straight through it and out the other side. The magic Wynne Jones creates has concrete, physical properties. It's pungent, like scent, leaving traces in the air. It's a palpable force; sometimes it sizzles with blueish light. Objects regularly become invisible and little people appear between the folds and cracks of the landscape. It's all very easy to believe.
