Art in a tremulous time

NEW YORK -- The Whitney Biennial, at its best, offers the public a view of the best new art being made in the United States, but it can also offer a glimpse of the American soul. Attending the press opening last week, and touring the three jam-packed floors of the gallery (the show includes 108 artists in all), it struck me that this year's version hasn't quite lived up to the first criterion (too much chaff amid the grains of wheat), but it seems to have lived up to the latter.
