The ballad of the unsung musicians
Mike McDonald, who used to front the Edmonton alternative-country, rock band Jr. Gone Wild in the eighties and nineties, has a doozy of a story to tell.The band, a hometown favourite that played like Johnny Cash at 78 rpm, was performing one of those once-in-a-lifetime gigs at the Silver Dollar in Toronto as part of a showcase of independent bands looking to grab the record industry's attention. As McDonald recalls in an episode of The Undiscovered Country -- a fascinating, seven-part series about itinerant, lesser-known Canadian musicians beginning tomorrow on Country Music Television -- the room was packed with homesick Edmontonians, the best possible crowd for Jr. Gone Wild.
